Excellencies, distinguished guests,
It is a great honour to accept this prestigious award on behalf of the Belgian Association for the Study of Obesity, or BASO, on the margins of this year’s UN General Assembly. BASO, is deeply grateful to the UN Inter-agency Task Force on Non-Communicable Diseases for this recognition of its work and its impact.
This award acknowledges BASO’s pioneering efforts in structuring obesity care through multidisciplinary collaboration and its strong commitment to education and communication—aimed at patients, healthcare professionals, and the broader public. Through continuous advocacy, BASO has helped reshape national health policy, emphasizing that obesity is a complex, multifactorial disease requiring holistic and data-based approaches. BASO’s policy recommendations have promoted early intervention, tailored therapies, and integrated care for both children and adults, ensuring that patients receive treatment based on individual needs and coordinated support. In particular, BASO aims to give patients a voice, as there is still a great deal of shame and stigma attached to being obese.
On behalf of BASO, I wish to salute all dedicated professionals, families and patients, collaborators at throughout Belgium, and partners in global health. I trust that this award will be an incentive to advance genuine change—not just within our country, but everywhere the struggle against obesity continues.
Thank you
